The Wing Band is run by a number of staff with varying roles within the Corps, and Band is just an additional duty (or passion) which they have undertaken.
AWO Mike Jefferies has been the hobnailed boot kicking the band forward since before most of you were born (no offence Mike!); his love of military music, and unfortunately Bagpipes has wowed cadets and held the band together like Scotch glue for centuries.... *cough* a couple of years now. His role in the Wing has since been compromised by the amount of work he has undertaken for Regional and Corps music services, but he says he still loves us!
Sqn Ldr RAFVR(T) John Plaice is head of TG for Sussex Wing, and band falls under his command (oh dear...). It's his job to make sure that everyone gets the info they need, when they need it; and he uses his stripes to make sure that people listen (most of the time). Oh yes, and he's an all-round good egg. Did we mention that?
ASgt Phil Mabbot runs 176 (Hove) Sqn Band, and allows the use of Squadron premises for massed band practises before events. Plans for world domination aside, Phil teaches his cadets how to play drums, and teaches band drill; and is happy to share his knowledge with all cadets who need his help.
CI Sally Morante runs XIX (Crawley) Sqn's famous Pipes & Drums band. With an unfailing supply of enthusiasm (just where do you get it from, Sal?) she provides any kind of logistics, cadets, and instruments for almost any event. She runs a tight ship, looks after all the cadets, and is generally a bit of a legend. She helps out at the Region Band an awful lot, and if you want to rule the world, she'd be the best sidekick ever.
CI Jo Sutton is attached to 1414 (Crowborough) Sqn, and is the Wing Band dogsbody. She plays every brass instrument known to man (and a few that aren't); and teaches both these, and music theory. If bullied she will also teach Bell Lyres, and a little drumming (although she's not so good with drums). She has re-arranged most of the music that Sussex Wing plays, and has scored most of the current playlist. She composes fanfares, so if you want one that is unique to your Squadron, drop her a line.
If you have any inquiries about the band or staff please email sussexwingband@hotmail.com. We will deal with your requests as soon as we can.
Please remember that all of the Wing Band staff have full time jobs, as well as their own Squadron or Wing duties - you may not get a reply straightaway, but you WILL get one!
